There shouldn’t be a competition regarding gender when it comes to leadership – leadership is a skill, and it is learned through practice and experience; it is not a duty for a specific gender. With that being said, it is also a fact that women make great leaders. However, they are not encouraged to be a leader in most cases. The problem arises from the patriarchal society and its norms. The question is, if women have the same qualifications and also exhibit the skills required to be great leaders, then why are they not given equal opportunities? This one question must be answered in a discussion wholly dedicated to it. In this article today, we are here to discuss WHY women should be the leaders and what are the factors behind them being great leaders?
Leadership can be defined as the ability to influence team members and achieving common goals with them. To be able to become a great leader means you need to accomplish and develop skills, including effective communication, influencing others, and supporting your team. According to a study, women are more likely to develop these skills than men, as they are better at communication and can show consideration towards others.
It is believed that women leaders are capable of adopting transformational leadership styles, and they engage more in contingent reward behaviors. While men, on the other hand, tend to adopt manage by exception style of leadership, i.e., they only intercede when any issue becomes severe and also the Lassiez-faire style of leadership.
Here is a list of some factors that explain why the world needs more female leaders in every field of life.
Women are better leaders because they know how to balance their personal life and professional life at the same time. Most people find women leaders more approachable with sensitive questions or personal requests. Women tend to care more about their teammates than male leaders. They care about the work-life balance and well-being of their team. Women tend to be more likely to become mentors and have an open and communicative relationship with their teams.
Women take out the time and put effort into listening; they do not react without listening to the whole thing. They know how to appreciate and value the viewpoints people discuss with them; no matter if the prospective matches theirs or not. Women are most likely to sit down and listen carefully to whatever the issue is, along with proposing a solution right away (most of the time). They tend to be more into giving chances to new ideas and plans than male leaders.
Women tend to focus on the team and teamwork. Moreover, as a leader, a woman relies on her team and can make bold and wise decisions on behalf of her team. With female leaders, employees feel more comfortable, as the environment around them is more home-like and communicative.
Women have several areas of their lives that they need to manage and balance throughout their lives, including their work life, children, household, and much more. This is proof that women can wear many hats effectively. They have the tendency to pay attention to several things at the same time and still give out their best. They have the ability to focus on everything necessary without neglecting the other tasks, and that is an essential skill for a leader to have.
Women face a lot more problems during their journey towards the top. Precisely, the hurdles they face and what it took for them to become a leader. They overcome the odds from the very start, so when the leadership comes into their hands, they already know how to handle situations when the odds are against them. An individual who has been accomplishing from the start is the perfect person to hold the position of a leader.
Instead of being scared of challenges, women leaders tend to be more motivated by challenges. The challenge of becoming a leader in the first place trains them how challenges can become a source 0of motivation. Their desire for accomplishing helps them achieve the best they can. They won’t take a “No” for an answer; instead, they think of solutions.
Here the training as a mother comes in handy; women usually know how to cope with crises at home with children. This is the reason why they can easily handle crisis situations related to the clients or HR. You can say handling situations is in their blood.
Women tend to understand their own emotions and the emotions of their teammates more than male leaders. It comes naturally to most women, and others develop it quickly and easily. Emotional intelligence is a skill critical for getting the best work done with your team.
Women leaders are more flexible and agile than others anyways. They know when to switch parts when one plan isn’t working right. Being flexible as a leader means you value the opinions of your teammates and are not stubborn enough to stick to something that is not good anymore just because you don’t like changing the path, even if it is for good.
Several thousand women worldwide are making it more transparent for our coming generation that women have the capability to do much more than what people expect from them. As leaders, women tend to have better skills than male leaders. It is not intended to degrade any gender, but to state the facts so that organizations know why they should hire more women and give them the opportunities to be leaders. In a gender-biased society, one must take a step towards equality.
